Dr. Oz’s New Superberry is the Lingonberry, Plus Other Anti-Aging Tips (Recap)

On the Dr. Oz Show today, Doctor Oz revealed his newest superberry is the lingonberry, plus he revealed some new anti-aging products and treatments and gadgets to help you fall asleep faster.

But first Dr. Oz asked everyone in the audience to take off their makeup. Scary stuff! But it’s the only way to find out the real age of your skin. But even Doctor Oz did the show without any makeup to hide his under-eye bags and dark circles. But there are some important health clues that can be discovered by seeing your facial skin without makeup.

Dr. Oz’s first guest today was dermatologist Dr. Anne Chapas. They came up with a quiz to determine what signs of aging are showing on your face. You can get the complete quiz on www.doctoroz.com. The areas he covered on the show were:

The Eyes

Are your upper eyelids drooping, almost touching your upper lashes?

As we age, the skin loses lose elasticity. If you pinch underneath your eye, time how long it takes the pinched skin to go back to normal. Ideal is under two seconds.

Some health concerns that might be revealed by your eyes are dehydration, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalance.

The Smile

Do you see smile lines from the corners of your nostrils to the corners of your mouth? If so, how clear are they? In stage #1, you won’t see any wrinkles. In Stage #2, you’ll see wrinkles when you smile or frown. In Stage #3, in your 40′s and 50′s, the wrinkles are getting etched into your skin. By Stage #4, the wrinkles can’t be covered by makeup anymore.

Skin Coloring

Instead of the coloring on your cheeks and forehead being even, do you have any small red dots or uneven coloring? Do you have it, some of it, or a lot? This could be sun damage, so definitely wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 30. But look into sun protective clothing too.

The Jowls

Is the skin on your cheeks and forehead smooth, or is it sagging? Sometimes this is caused by yo-yo dieting, because you lost weight too quickly and it couldn’t snap back.

Forehead

Are there any frown lines running horizontally across your forehead, or between your eyebrows? These are the wrinkles that are first to appear when you’re stressed out. Obviously, having good coping skills is important. And don’t smoke! It does horrible things to your face!

After you take the quiz and score your results you can figure out your skin’s real age. Some people in the audience got red slips because their face skin was older than their actual age.

Revolutionary Ways to Look Younger

Now that we’re all depressed about our facial skin, Dr. Oz revealed some revolutionary ways to look younger. Helping him was Cosmetics Cop Paula Begoun.

Wrinkles: Diminish wrinkles with a cream that contains retinol. It has to be in stable packaging, Paula says no jars! She recommends one by SkinCeuticals, cost is about $59 in drugstores.

Alternatively, you can get the Vampire Facelift: this is done using your own blood to fill in the fine lines and wrinkles. Cost is about $800 to $1200 per treatment at a doctor’s office.

Age Spots: Paula recommends Miracle Worker Dark Spot Corrector by Philosophy. It contains Vitamin C and niacinamides that research shows actually work.

If that doesn’t work, Dr. Chapas recommends Elure Advanced Lightening Cream. It reduces melanin in the skin. If topical are not enough, she uses the Clear+Brilliant fractional laser. The benefit starts with the first treatment and builds with more. It costs between $250 and $500 per treatment.

Tips for Problem Hair

The best thing you can do for your hair is get the ends trimmed off regularly, according to Jennifer Goldstein, Beauty Director of Prevention Magazine. If you don’t want to lose any length, ask for a “dusting” which only takes off about a quarter-inch.

Dry Hair: as we age, our hair has a lot less oil in it. By the time you get into your 50′s, there’s hardly any oil there naturally. The solution is to color your hair less, don’t blow dry it and don’t shampoo it as much either. Only shampoo your hair every three days. In between, use a dry shampoo like ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo (about $22). When you do wash, be sure to use a conditioner with fortifying oils, like Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition (about $4.50).

Damaged Hair: Don’t use a flat iron more than twice a week, and always use a protective product before hand. Try Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum (about $30). To help repair damaged hair, use a leave-in treatment like REDKEN Time Reset Corrective Defense (about $20).

The Lingonberry: Dr. Oz’s New Super Berry

A distant cousin to the cranberry, these berries are diabetes fighters, can help prevent heart disease, have antibiotic properties and maybe even prevent cancer. They taste great, kind-of like a pomegranate crossed with a blueberry. Lingonberries are also known as cowberries, by the way.

You can eat lingonberries in a jam just straight off the spoon or put it on toast. Dr. Oz of course loves smoothies, so he has an anti-aging smoothie recipe for us.

Dr. Oz’s Lingonberry Smoothie Recipe

  • 3/4 cup ice
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon lingonberry jam

Process these ingredients in a blender until smooth, drink and enjoy!
